With a gastro outbreak hitting dogs in parts of Brisbane, it’s a reminder that all dogs are guilty of some questionable drinking habits. But here’s the one type of water they should skip slurping if they want to avoid that far from fun vomiting and diarrhoea…

Dogs and cats love a slightly dodgy drink. But with a gastro outbreak hitting the pets of Brisbane, here’s the one type of water they should skip slurping if they want to avoid that far from fun vomiting and diarrhoea…

It’s not uncommon to see some water consumed that would make your stomach turn. And for the most part, the digestive system of a dog and cat copes with some pretty extraordinary things. But as the dogs of the Teneriffe and New Farm area of Brisbane are discovering, there are limits. They’ve been hit with a dose of Giardia (which causes vomiting, diarrhoea and bloating) after drinking from puddles in the local dog park. And this brings us to the water your dog must avoid this summer…

Any puddles, pools or ponds that could be contaminated with other dog’s poo, MUST be off limits. Faecal parasites (like Giardia), bacteria and even viruses can all too easily spread quickly between dogs through water this way. Look at the higher ground around the puddle and if dogs have been on it, it’s often safer to assume the worst! It’s where bringing your own portable water bowl or getting your dog to drink straight from the tap are the better options.

Ok..so what about shared water bowls outside cafes? Well, while they can potentially spread bugs like Kennel Cough, because there’s no faecal contamination, they’re not as dangerous. In fact, they may act a little like the schoolyard for the furry family and expose them to a variety of generally non-harmful bugs which strengthens their immune system…
