When a tiny whale calf lost his mum, hope came in the most unlikely form. A dolphin mother adopted him. And even scientists are amazed...

A blended family is so 2019. But what makes this one so beautiful and remarkable is that adoption of another species is incredibly rare. After all, life is hard enough in the wild without helping out the competition. But this bottlenose dolphin mum appears to have protected and even nursed the melon headed whale calf for up to 4 years in the waters off French Polynesia.

Clearly this mum had a whale sized amount of love to give, but it was undoubtedly a maternal instinct that saved this whales life...
