The eyes might be the window to the soul, but puppy dog eyes are weapons of mass destruction. They can melt even the hardest human. And it turns out they’re no accident.
Over the last 20,000 years, we’ve bred dogs that, with a simple (but deadly) move of their eyebrows upward and inward, can make their eyes appear larger and more in need of love! In fact, dogs in rescue shelters that can perfect the move even get adopted faster! In fact, researchers at the University of Portsmouth in the UK found that the muscles that can achieve this are well developed in our most loved dogs (Labrador, Bloodhound, Chihuahua, German Shepherd) but almost completely absent in wolves, our pet’s great (x2000) grandparents.
What’s not clear is whether our furry family members even appreciate the supreme power of puppy dog eyes. They may be a complete accident or something they’re even copying from us. Either way, it’s a weapon that they’ll continue to use for good as well as evil. After all, that extra treat doesn’t offer itself…
