How do you feel about Puppy Prozac? After all, some vet hospitals now have as many types of anti-depressants as they have antibiotics. And it’s not just a Bondi thing!
It’s all because we’re now so much more aware of our pet’s feelings. And anxieties. But is prozac always the answer? Well, no.
Here are my thoughts…
What is it?
So Puppy Prozac is the same anti-depressant (aka Fluoxetine) that a lot of people depend on every day. We just give a smaller dose. And hide the tablet in chicken.
It’s called a ‘selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor’. Basically, serotonin is a feel-good calming chemical in the brain. And it makes sure pets have more of it.
Why so popular?
Two big reasons…
1. They’re unique! Like us, our pets have a huge variety of personalities. Some cope with new challenges or time spent alone, others don’t.
2. The C word. We adopted dogs and cats like crazy during Covid when we were always home. Leaving them for work when they’d never been alone before was a big jolt.
Did you know? A crazy 45% of American pet owners who presented to vet hospitals for behavioural issues were prescribed it. For their dogs. Not themselves.
What’s it used for?
The most common by far is separation anxiety. The biggest factor being dogs not fitting into our busy working schedules. But also,
The big question…Do they need it?!
Well, not straight away. I see it as being an option once you’ve worked through these options.
1. More exercise. Especially before work. But not too intense!
2. Removing, limiting or desensitising to that source of stress
4. Some enrichment with radio, TV and most importantly, something to chew or squeak.
4. Nutraceuticals like L-theanine
What about L-theanine?
It’s natural, proven to work and doesn’t sedate your bestie like Prozac can. Yep, this amino acid has earned its right to be the alternative anxiety and stress treatment.
It works by helping them to keep their brain activity calm. It also boosts dopamine!
It’s also the hero ingredient in my Calm + Collected treats…
