I get this a lot. People assume that Drool is just an endorsement or ambassadorship for me. That I’m getting paid to put my face to a brand owned by some massive multinational pet food giant. Well, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
I’ve been a vet for 20 years now and I’ve had my Drool blog for nearly 10 years. I started writing my daily Drool tips out of frustration over the lack of honest, trustworthy information out there on the internet. But I also listen. I listen in the vet clinic (where I still work), on those late night emergency calls or even on the street where people stop me to ask questions. The one thing that keeps on coming up is that you’ve lost faith in what you feed your furry family. You don’t know who and what to trust because of the questionable ingredients, contamination fears and sneaky marketing tricks and lack of true regulation of the industry.
So I decided to do something about it. I worked tirelessly for years to create treats that I could believe in. That were better. That were finally the food we could trust. And that were born out of that animal insight that comes from living and breathing pets my whole life.
So Drool is just my small business. My passion. And my mission to create something with honesty, integrity and quality. Because family deserve the best…
Much to everyone’s relief, yes. In crafting this unique ball shape, we wanted something that would work for all the different sized, yet equally adorable mouths out there. So no matter whether you’re petit, pointy or just plain jowelly, the size of the ball works in all sized mouths. AND we’re proud of that. We want all dogs to be able to not just pick up the balls and play, but break them open and unleash the goodness inside.
With treat balls that roll and school snacks that snap, aren’t you encouraging pets to play with their food?
Yes...yes we are.
Quite simply, all the good stuff and none of the nasty stuff. But the key element with any food for the furry family is where the protein comes from. You see, not all proteins are equal. That’s why Drool treats only use 100% chicken breast as the number 1 ingredient, and 0% meat meals. Real chicken breast is not only way more nutritious, it also contains more useful amino acids and is way more digestible. Then they are rolled with scientifically backed supplements, probiotics and vitamins. You can find a full list of the ingredients we use, and why here.
Despite a lot of twisting of our arms by furry legs to remove this section altogether, there is a recommended number of treats your pup should eat each day. And while it won’t be a massive problem if they stretch this a little, try not to have too much of a good thing. Overeating even the healthiest foods can make gut upsets more of a risk. Plus, when your little mate isn’t used to high quality treats, there may be an adjustment period. And that’s ok!
We recommended the following daily amounts, depending on the size of your dog.
Daily Boosters
Small (1-5KG): 1-2 treat balls
Medium (6-15KG): 2-4 treat balls
Large (16-30KG) 4-7 treat balls

Well, this is the exciting part. Most dogs have their minds blown that we’ve combined a treat with a ball - their two favourite things in the world. That’s why you’ll see that excited tail wag every time you go for the pack of treats. While most dogs will munch on the treat ball straight away, some will sniff and lick at it before they eat. This is actually the best part. Because they’ve never experienced a ball shaped treat (and real chicken breast) before, this is a real discovery moment. Once they bite in and break the ball open, their whole world changes and they get it. But just remember, it might take a while that first time. If they’re still confused, you can crack open that first ball to give them a hand.
Remember, this is a big moment. They’ve probably never experienced a ball shaped treat before. And they’re more than likely used to eating treats containing quite pungent smelling, lower quality meat meals (read about the fast food of dog treats above). So believing they get to snack on a pure, delicious chicken breast ball that you’ve just rolled along the ground might just take a moment. But once they know, they know. They’ll quickly get in the groove of treats that are rolling with goodness.
We hear this a lot. And it’s actually a measure of how much they treasure their Drool treats. It’s called ‘caching’ and is an instinctive (and fascinating) reaction to being given a ‘high value’ food item. So basically it’s a massive complement. They know they’ve been given something special and want to ensure no other furry (or human) family member gets their mitts on it. We find they typically find a quiet corner to indulge in their Drool dreams! It’s pretty cute.
When you turn treat time into play time, anything is possible! While School Snacks have a snappable stick made for repeated rewarding, Drool balls can do just about anything. Sure you can simply hand-feed the balls for that instant feel-good buzz. But for more excitement, try rolling the ball along the ground. It’s always a winner and creates the most fun and rewarding game of fetch they’ve probably ever played. Quite often, we see our furry family then flick the balls around with their mouth and paws and create their own game. The fact they’re using their beautiful minds at this point and playing makes us so happy! You can also hide the treats in toys, under furniture or around the house. While we don’t recommend throwing them in the air to catch, you could try your own Drool drop! Just throw the ball into the ground and watch them scurry after the pieces this explosion of flavour creates.
We’re very proud of the fact that Drool treats aren’t mindless meals. Sure they get the health benefits from each of the treat varieties but the fact the treat balls challenge and stimulate their brains through play and games is possibly the biggest high for the Drool team. Our little hairy humans are real thinkers and need an outlet to express their playful side. We love that Drool treats provide that enrichment to make the favourite part of their day even more fun.
Just how much nutrition is found in these discarded parts is questionable to start with. But there’s even fewer nutrients left once they’ve been processed and oxidised at high heat like this. The basic fact is meat meals aren’t considered to be fit for human consumption; that says it all. The best comparison is back to human fast food. Meat meals might have a strong smell from the pungent body parts they’re made from, but it doesn’t mean they’re good for them. In fact, quite the opposite.
While the digestibility (% your dog actually absorbs) of real chicken meat is around 95%, the digestibility of meat meals is significantly less. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, yet under super high temperatures those crucial nutrients are oxidised and denatured to the point they may be of little use. So a large portion of what they’re eating just ends up going right through them undigested. That’s why dogs on lower quality foods need a toilet break a lot more than Drool dogs.
Why not? We all know ball-shaped food has a firm spot in our lives (protein balls, bliss balls, meatballs - the list goes on) so Drool treats are equally at home in the human world.
And, every pet‘s favourite part of their day (apart from mealtime) is playtime. In the best news dogs have had in years, we‘re now combining both. It’s their unique oddball shape that makes sure there‘s play in every pack. Rolling them across the floor will mean their favourite person just got a whole lot more fun.
What’s puppy life without treats?! So a million times...yes! Treats fuel that play they love and then sneak their way into their dreams. In fact, even though we can’t prove it, we’d like to think puppies are chasing after Drool treats when they run in their sleep. The best Drool treats for puppies are undoubtedly School Snacks. These fun, snappable pyramid-shaped stick treats are perfect for encouraging positive reinforcement training when you’re rewarding your pup, as well as building that oh-so-important bond that lets them know you’re on their team. Even when they chew that expensive shoe or decide coming back to you in the park isn’t an immediate priority. We get it. No-one is perfect. But at least the reward for learning gets them on the right foot…
Plus, the all-natural ingredients (like L-theanine) are proven to help with concentration and overall brain performance and the delicious, real aussie chicken breast means it’s a treat they’ll really learn to love.
Remember, they’ll also need to have their puppy food as part of a complete and balanced puppy diet.
Like any food too special to leave waiting on a shelf, these treats will be past their best around 4 weeks after they are opened. But let’s be real, your dog will probably tell you with some primo puppy eyes if it’s been too long between treats!
Yes it is. But honestly, we want more. We want to be using sustainable packaging that’s completely biodegradable and food safe for treats. And the moment that technology is available, Drool will be using it.
To make sure we can guarantee the freshness of our treats when they arrive, we need to manage the water content of the treat balls and school snacks. Too much moisture and they’ll be stale. So it’s normal for your little legend to have a drink of water with their treats.
Ingredients
We believe in local. That’s why Drool treats are made from Aussie chicken breast after being rolled with supplements hand-picked by Dr Chris Brown and then crafted in Melbourne, Australia.
The question of what’s even in a meat meal is a mystery. Which is a problem for us. But what goes into a meat meal also varies greatly from one day to the next. But essentially, meat meals are made by taking the parts of the animal not fit for human consumption (like gristle, blood vessels, bones and connective tissue) and processing them under high heat to kill bacteria, grinding them up and then creating a dry powder. Yes, why they’re called ‘meat’ meals when they contain very little meat is also a massive problem. And it’s why we’re trying to bring honesty and integrity to pet treats.
Functional ingredients are on the rise and we want natural supplements to benefit our furry family! We believe the hairiest human in your home deserves superfoods with a range of health-boosting benefits, just like you.
Dogs and cats need to deal with joint aches, gut health, anxiety, and feeling hungry all the time too, so we use superfoods to keep your pet’s physical and mental health at its peak.
While we’re supporting Aussie dogs, we want to support Aussie farmers too. Drool treats source fresh, succulent chicken breast from farms in country Victoria.
We thought long and hard about this. In the end, the risk of spoilage from potentially dangerous bacteria and moulds meant the safest option was to use a minimal amount of human food grade preservatives that are also found in our healthiest human snacks and treats. That way, we can all sleep at night.
