It’s always a proud pet parent moment when you discover your dog has a best friend. But they might also be the ultimate health tonic. Researchers have just discovered something remarkable about dogs with lots of dog friends. They live longer…
Here’s why it’s so significant…
Dogs and a surprisingly large number of cats are social creatures. Just like us, they feel safe, secure and most importantly stimulated when they’re around others. And importantly, not flying solo.
And a report by the Aging Project published in the Journal of Animal Health, has found that a social circle is more important to prevent cognitive (brain) decline, behavioural problems and overall health issues than any other factor. Meaning pets with friends live significantly longer.
In fact, dog and cat besties were 5 times more powerful than how much money you have or how stable your home is.
The most important factor? Stimulating that brain of theirs. A lounge room or backyard is a dull and lonely place. Just like people, without that social fix, they become less physically and mentally active and prone to aging faster…
So what can you do?
Well, here are some quick wins.
So next time you see your bestie unleashing chaos with his or her friends, just relax. It’s actually good for their health. Even if it’s not good for your nerves!
